We had a great weekend. It’s a nice change from our
hectic day-to-day existing to bum around and simply take it easy. On a
normal weekend, we still have chores to do. We still have to fend for
ourselves since it’s not easy to get household help around here. They
normally require sponsorship from a national and are very costly unlike back
home.
Anyway, our friend Atif invited us to his flat for the
weekend – meaning Thursday and Friday. He owns a three bedroom flat in an
exclusive Beach Resort called Durat – Al Urus. Its about an hours drive from
where we live. Only owners of (very expensive) villas and their guest are
allowed entrance inside. Once you enter the Resort, it was like stepping
into another country. You will see a lot of people wearing regular clothes
and not the traditional black covers called ‘abaya.’ The place is like a
small city complete with a Marina, restaurants like Starbucks and
Fuddruckers, bike lanes, jet and water craft rentals, groceries and so on.
They also have good telephone systems and I was able to check my email once
in awhile.
The main attraction of this place, apart from the sun
and surf, is Jet skiing. You will notice that early afternoon a number of
Jet Ski appears at the beach. Everyone zooms around in and out of the bay in
front of the villas and into the open sea. There are also two very long
connecting channels with villas on the shore. Along those shoreline are
three or four massive mansion rest homes of very wealthy nationals.
Atif gave us a short lesson on using his Jet Ski. It
was surprising to know that no matter what happens we must not release your
fingers from the accelerator. He said that the ski will stop and your
momentum will throw you overboard. So it was important to decelerate,
accelerate and even turn with the proper amount of thrust.
In our first few hours of run, I rode the ski with my
darling. When I got the feel of it, I built up enough courage to make my
solo runs and it was great. It was easier to handle the three seater Yamaha
Jet Ski alone since there was no extra weight. Turning and acceleration was
easier. Alone and in a straight path, you can drive the craft to about 62
kph. Turning on the other hand cannot be done at this speed since your jet
ski will turn and your body would still be moving forward.
The rest of the time, we just swam in the sea, bummed around,
watched Satellite Reality TV, ate or took naps.
It was a great break from our normal life. It was made
possible through the generosity of our friend Atif Sindi.
